NORTH BETHESDA, Md. (WUSA) -- Montverde (FL) fended off an improbable 14-2 fourth quarter run from Montrose Christian, escaping with a 50-47 victory in ESPN's National High School Invitational Friday at Georgetown Prep.
Eagles head coach Kevin Boyle praised his team's defensive intensity after the road victory.
"[Montrose] could not score in a half court set. They had one basket in a half court set in the first half," said Boyle.
The key to Montverde's win was the team's hounding defense on heralded Mustang Justin Anderson. The Montrose senior finished with just three points on 1-for-14 shooting. Eagle forward Patricio Garino, who was battling a severe case of tendinitis, marked the UVA-bound Anderson as well as any challenger has this season.
"It happens as a ball player. You have great games, you have bad games," said Anderson following the loss.
Kasey Hill continued to impress every basketball pundit in the building. The 6-foot-1 Montverde point guard scored 20 points and flashed an array of moves. A 2013 University of Florida commit, Hill displayed his speed on coast-to-coast layups; his handles on dizzying crossovers and his smarts on extra passes to big men down low.
Despite losing, the Mustangs held two superior advantages throughout the game. Montrose out-rebounded the Eagles, 46-23, and shot 34 free throws compared to Montverde's nine. It was a tough loss to swallow.
"We've lost three games by a total of seven points," said Montrose head coach Stu Vetter. "And to play the level of play that we do -- even though we don't get credit locally -- we play some of the best teams in the country. We don't back away from anybody."
Montverde will take on Findlay Prep Saturday at 2 p.m. for the ESPN championship.
