WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- In this moment in Black History, we take a look at the career of Samuel Gravely Jr.

He was among the first black naval officers in World War  II. In 1962, he became the first African American to command a combat ship in the Navy.

Gravely went on to become the first black admiral, he retired as a 3 star vice admiral. A new destroyer was named after him in 2009.
