WASHINGTON (AP) - Last week's shouting match between D.C. Council members Marion Barry and David Catania has prompted a measure to make the council clean up its language.

Council Chairman Kwame R. Brown tells The Washington Post that he wants to enact a code of conduct that will bar members from using "profane, indecent or abusive language" in a public meeting.

Barry and Catania shouted at each other during a council retreat and a discussion over the future of United Medical Center.

Brown says the chairman could remove a member from a meeting after a warning about inappropriate language. The council doesn't have a sergeant-at-arms, but he says the measure would get across the point about the need to be civil.
