WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- The Washington Human Society says a man who de-clawed two kittens at home last year, leading to their death, was sentenced Friday.

Eric Felipe Gaskin admitted in November that he declawed two eight-week-old kittens at his D.C. home in early May 2012. Their claws had been ripped from their feet and, according to WHS, "most of the bones in each foot were crushed, including each of the kittens' four legs." The breaks may have happened when the kittens tried to escape, said the organization. The cats' paws became infected, leading to paralyzation and then death (by euthanization).

Gaskin was arrested September 17, 2012 on two counts of felony animal cruelty and pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges of Cruelty to Animals in November 2012.

WHS reports that on Friday a judge sentenced Gaskin to "180 days in jail with work release plus a $100 fine to The Victim of Violent Crimes Fund (VVCF) for the first count. For the second count, Gaskin received 180 days in jail (suspended), three years of supervised probation, 40 hours community service, an additional $100 fine to VVCF, a mental health assessment, parenting skills group, and ordered not to own any pets for the duration of his probation."
