(WUSA) -- Google is letting you see some of the world's best artworks and top museums all without leaving your computer.
The Google Art Project began with a collection of 29 museums in 16 different cities. This week, Google announced it is expanding to dozens more museums, including some here in Washington.
Google's online collection now includes works from the White House's art colection, the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Smithsonian's Freer Gallery of Art.
The list of museums goes far beyond Washington. Visitors can peruse art from the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Acropolis Museum in Athens, the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, and the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, among many others.
"We wanted the Portrait Gallery to be a part of what Google has created on-line," said Nik Apostolides, the Associate Director of the National Portrait Gallery. The goal is to reach out to "visitors who might never come to the museum, might never have visited it, might not know about the Smitshsonian's National Portrait Gallery," he told 9NEWS NOW.
