CHEVY CHASE, Md, -- (WUSA) Doctors now realize the body's inflammatory response is a key culprit in heart disease, diabetes, even Alzheimer's disease. One way to fight internal inflammation is with a diet that helps you "Stay Healthy and Feel Young."
Dr. Deborah Barbour, a cardiologist in Chevy Chase, Maryland tells her patients they can reduce a major risk for heart disease simply by controlling what they eat. Barbour says to avoid eating foods high in sugar or fat because they can cause an inflammatory response in the body shortly after. That inflammation is a result of the abrupt spike in blood sugar caused by those foods, and it can contribute to the build up of plaque that clogs our arteries.
To avoid inflammation, Dr. Barbour recommends foods that fight this process such as oatmeal, which can also help lower cholesterol.
"Oatmeal is one of the darlings of the medical profession as far as recommendations for breakfast now. The fiber slows digestion, it slows the emptying of the stomach. It maintains a feeling of being full," Barbour said.
Other top anti-aging foods are found abundantly in the "Mediterranean Diet." The diet contains foods like fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole grains. Protein sources such as beans and nuts are also recommended, as they help regulate blood sugar after a meal.
Dr. Barbour says Mediterranean cuisine relies on heart-healthy olive oil rather than butter. Fish high in Omega 3 fatty acids also play a prominent role in the diet instead of red meat.
Barbour emphasizes that consuming these foods at a much slower pace than our usual grab-and-go lifestyle is critical in combating inflammation.
"We know the slower you eat, the less you eat. Because it takes probably about 20 to 30 minutes for your stomach to know you're full," said Barbour.
Experts say that in addition to eating slower and avoiding foods that cause a rush in blood sugar, inflammation can also be avoided by implementing fish oil supplements, cinnamon, and vinegar into your diet.
