BELTSVILLE, Md. (WUSA) -- An 10-month-old baby has died in an apartment bathtub in Beltsville, Md., police said.
It happened at around 10:30 a.m. at the 11300 block of Evans Trail, when the boy was found unresponsive in the bathroom, police said.
Police are still investigating the incident.
Neighbors tell us the mother and her baby boy were home alone, while the father was at work and two older siblings were at school.
"She said something like, 'Help me with my baby. He's dying,'" said neighbor Karen Guerrero.
Another neighbor, Aminata Simmons, said, "It was loud, she hollered, real loud. And everybody, wherever you were, you come out to help."
Neighbors pitched in to try to revive the 10 month old boy. Then, they called 9-1-1.
"When I came up, I saw about 15 police cars. I saw some officers standing in front of the building," Little Stewart, a neighbor, told 9 News.
Police and paramedics arrived at the Beltsville apartment complex, but it was too late.
"I'm very sad because it's my neighbor and my son played with her kids," shared Jyony Velasquez.
By early afternoon, investigators were still looking through apartment for clues in this child death, the second case in less than a day.
"It is extremely unusual to have a 24 hour period where you have separate death investigations of young children. It's something that hits everyone hard. It hits parents hard. It hits police officers hard," said Prince George's County Police Department Spokesperson Julie Parker.
The autopsy will be done Wednesday to determine the definitive cause of the baby's death.
We'll have more information about this case, as it becomes available.
