WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) --- Rebuilding Together of Washington, D.C. makes free repairs for low income homeowners, especially Veterans, the elderly, disabled and families with children. They also renovate community facilities that serve their target population.

Janice Stango, Executive Director of the DC Chapter of Rebuilding Together, says "What we do is perform free repairs at community facilities all around the city."

Volunteers from the Washington Nationals have come together to work on Shirley's Place. It is a homeless hospitality center that offers showers, food and a comforting environment to the homeless. Skilled workers have built new shelves, installed cabinets, repainted walls and even added a play area for children. Naeema Hayes is a client who comes to the homeless center daily and hopes to soon find a place of her own. She expresses her joy about the renovation, "I'm really glad that they're doing a lot of restoration. I'm really excited about the children's area and I'm sure my daughter's going to be really excited too."

If anyone would like to help with any future projects, you or your organization can actually sponsor a home repair project. Just assemble a group of volunteers to do the work and Rebuilding Together will work with you. They will match you with a needy homeowner and they will guide you step by step. Coming together to rebuild Washington, D.C. will be a great experience!
